This is the story of Amanda Conroy Malone - a naive, inexperienced, young woman - whose husband of seven years disappears on Christmas Day. She is left penniless and jobless in the Nevada desert outside of Las Vegas in a house trailer without a car.

Amanda’s married sister whisks her away to live in her and her husband's sprawling riverside home in the San Joaquin Valley - a far cry from the meager existence both girls experienced in the Arkansas hill country as they were growing up in their grandmother’s care.

Amanda's first job as a waitress is a means to an end. Her dream of being independent, working and living in Bruges, Belgium - where lacemaking and medieval quaintness and beauty abound, is uppermost in her mind. But the day comes when she must decide what she wants most: her dreams of Belgium or living in the USA with the man who adores her.
